Scottish Bagpipers - My Thesis

My middle name, Dalziel, is Scottish. And my family motto for the Dalziel Clan is “I Dare.”

In my second term in the Photographic Technology program at NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), I had to do a thesis, and we got to choose the topic. I wanted to show off my Scottish side, so I decided to do my photographic thesis on Scottish Bagpipers and their culture.

We had to take 15 different images from 15 separate sessions and present them in photos and a presentation. Since it was a term-long project, a lot of work went into this, but it was hard to get it all done since I still had my regular assignments on top of everything. But it was so fun to do. I had my one friend Christopher Arbter model and a family friend Alastair Briggs, and I tried my hand at some product photography as well, which went well.

I got detailed shots of parts of the bagpiper uniform, like the kilt, sporran, sgian dubh, and the bagpipes themselves. This type of photography was exciting to do, but the portraits were still my favourites to do.

Here are a few photos I took, but if you want more information about a local bagpiper in Edmonton, Alberta, look here! This is Alastair Briggs's website https://www.albertabagpiper.ca/
