Things to Think About When Planning a Fantasy Photoshoot

When planning your fantasy photoshoot, there are a few things to remember, like a location, attire, mood, and more. Now I categorize fantasy under fine art photography, but the most important thing is that you get the perfect session for you with photos you love. Here are a few things to consider when planning a fantasy photo shoot, and we can talk more in detail during a consultation.

THEME

The theme of a session is arguably one of the most important things to keep in mind so everything goes well together. Whether it’s a fairy tale, medieval, dystopian future, or another pop culture masterpiece, your clothes should complement the themes and help bring your character to life. For example, if you want to do a pirate-styled shoot, try to find an older-style shirt or dress with flowy arms and some pants you don’t mind getting dirty. Check out the photos below if you want a better idea for a female pirate look!

LOCATION

The location of the session is another essential key to the session. The environment can help add to the story and character you want to portray. Consider whether you like trees, a field, rivers or lakes, buildings, etc. Going with the pirate example, it would make more sense for you to be near some kind of water source like a river or lake (we don’t get many oceans in the prairies).

ACCESSORIES

Props are a great way to give your character more life; you can make or buy some props that will help make you and your character look more believable and support the theme of the shoot pop more! Running with pirates, some swords, belts with a buckle, sashes or corsets, and of course, the famous hats.

CLOTHING

As to what to wear, I briefly mentioned it in the theme part of this post, but I will go over a few other things. First, ensure your wardrobe fits the idea and style you want for the session. For example, you don’t want to show up to an elf-like session-themed shoot in a black leather jacket and dark-coloured clothes. One thing to remember is, surprisingly, the footwear you choose. In a session, it could be one hour or three if you want, and if you’re standing for all of that, you want to make sure you’re comfortable in the shoes you wear that day. Or bring a few different options so you can pick and choose!

Overall, there are many things to think about when planning a session, but I will be here to answer any questions and give you ideas if needed. Below are a few photos of a pirate-themed shoot I did with my beautiful friend Emma!
