Artistic Swimming - Things to think about when taking photos.

Getting the perfect timing for the swimmers in the water takes a lot of practice and patience. There are always elements in their routines that you can count on, such as highlights and incredible boosts. Artistic swimming, formerly known as synchronized swimming, presents a unique challenge for both performers and photographers. Capturing compelling images at a competition or practice requires a careful balance of technical skill and artistic vision.

Timing

Timing is crucial to achieving the perfect moment in a routine to get a stunning image. You should also watch out for small cues, such as when you see the swimmers' heads just peeking out of the water, which signifies that they are about to do a body boost. Or when you see at least two swimmers stacked on each other, it means they are about to throw an athlete out of the water.

Direction

The direction you face when taking photographs of artistic swimming matters a little bit, but the swimmers move around the pool so much that you will likely get a picture of their faces regardless of where you set up. However, getting lower to the ground makes the shots look much cooler. You can capture more of their legs in the air, which is an interesting angle when a swimmer is in the air. You can also get a better eye line with them.

Practice

Practice matters more than anything else when it comes to photographing artistic swimming. Even if you have the best lens, camera, and the best vantage point for taking the photo, you need to know when to take the pictures and when the most exciting parts of the routine are. Attending a practice of the club or routines you want to take pictures of and get to know the swimmers and what they like is essential.

Artistic swimming is a beautiful sport, and the athletes who perform it are incredible. They give their all in every performance, and capturing photos at each competition is a joy. Seeing the swimmers' smiling faces after they complete their routines is a fantastic feeling!
